The Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport will be presenting DANSCORE from November 19th to November 22nd. All performances will begin at 7:30pm and will be held in the Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, on the SUNY Brockport campus. The performance on Saturday, November 22 is a special Scholarship Fund Benefit performance. This year the DANSCORE performance includes several world premieres choreographed by faculty and guest artists, and danced by graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Dance. Major dance artist Dianne McIntyre was invited to make a new work by Professor Jacquie Davis, using Brockport dance students, with substantial support from New York State Dance Force. McIntyre, founder of the dance/music ensemble Sounds in Motion, is known for her collaborations with legendary musicians, as well as for Broadway choreography and other theatre/dance works. McIntyre collaborated with three Department of Dance staff musicians on the new work, which was built in an intensive workshop setting. Professor Davis commented on the project: “It was exciting for the dancers to be in on the process of making a work with a choreographer who has also choreographed for companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. It was also a great opportunity for the students to participate in a rich collaboration between a choreographer and our talented musicians.”
Visiting Professor Bill Evans will be restaging Colony a dance of his from 2001. Evans says about the work: “Several years ago, I was invited to mentor young artists of the Kahurangi Maori Dance Trust in Hastings, New Zealand, as they prepared a dance work for a North American tour. During my time there, some of the dancers took me to their ‘whare runaga,’ or sacred communal meetinghouse. While there, I was fascinated by photographs of their ancestors, Polynesian people wearing restrictive Victorian English clothing and holding rigidly formal postures imposed on them by their British colonizers. Those powerful images were burned indelibly into my memory and were the basis for this work.” In addition, Professor Suzanne Oliver commissioned a new piece of music from Department of Dance staff musician Mark Olivieri. Other faculty who will be premiering works include Department Chair Darwin Prioleau, Anne Burnidge, Heather Roffe, and Maura Keefe. Keefe also serves as the artistic director for the concert.
